Driving Licence: Foreign Drivers

Foreign visitors can rent a car in Malaysia if they meet the requirements and provide valid documents. International customers should prepare a valid home country licence held for at least 2 years, a passport, and an International Driving Permit if required. The IDP is used together with the original licence. It does not replace it.

Do you need an International Driving Permit?

Whether you need an IDP depends on the country that issued your driving licence.

Licences issued in English can usually be used without an IDP. This generally includes licences from Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Licences not in English or Malay usually require an IDP. This commonly applies to licences from China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan.

An IDP translates your licence into a standard format, and does not replace your original licence. If an IDP is required, you must bring both the original physical driving licence and the original physical IDP. Digital copies of an IDP are not accepted.

Identification confirms the renter's identity, and the name on it should match your booking to avoid delays. Malaysian customers bring their MyKad (IC). Foreign customers bring a valid passport.

If Your Documents Do Not Match

Your booking details must match your driving licence and identification. For example, if the name on your booking is different from the name on your licence or passport, Agtran may need to check your information before releasing the vehicle, which can cause delays at pickup. Make sure your details are correct when you book, and if you notice a mistake, contact Agtran before your pickup date to update it.

Minimum Age

To rent a car with Agtran, drivers must be 21 years old or above and hold a valid driving licence. Before booking, make sure you meet the age requirement and have your documents ready for verification.

What to Bring at Pickup
