What should I know during my rental?

Dernière mise à jour le 16 September 2026

This guide covers the practical questions that come up while you have an Agtran rental car: how the mileage allowance works, the fuel policy, tolls and Touch n Go, adding another driver, and what to do if you break down or have an accident. If you are still getting ready to collect the car, it helps to have the documents needed to rent a car ready first.

What Is the Fuel Policy?

Agtran uses a level to level fuel policy. You receive the car with a certain fuel level, and you return it at the same level. There is no need to fill the tank completely unless it was full when you collected it. This is the simplest and most common fuel policy in Malaysia, and it means you only pay for the fuel you actually use. If the car is returned at a lower level, a charge of RM15 per level applies (see below).

If the car is returned with a lower fuel level than when you collected it, a charge of RM15 per level applies for each level the fuel has dropped. For example, if the car comes back two levels lower than at pickup, the refuelling charge is RM30. To avoid this, top the fuel back up to roughly the same level before you return the car.

How the Mileage Allowance Works

Your rental includes a mileage allowance, which is the distance you can drive before an additional charge may apply. The important detail is that the allowance applies across the whole rental period, not per day, so it does not reset each morning. The exact allowance for your booking is shown in your rental agreement.

Because the allowance covers the entire booking rather than resetting daily, it is worth keeping in mind if you plan several days of driving or a long road trip. If you know you will cover a long distance, check the allowance in your agreement, or ask our team, so you can plan ahead.

A few examples of how far the distance goes:

  • Short local trips around a city usually stay well within the allowance
  • A day trip such as Kuala Lumpur to Melaka and back covers a fair part of it in one go
  • A multi day trip visiting several towns can pass the allowance, so plan for the per kilometre charge

If you know in advance that you will drive a long distance, tell us when you book. It is better to plan for it than to be surprised by the charge at return.

Tolls and Touch n Go

Malaysian expressways use electronic toll payment, so there are no cash lanes at most toll plazas. Agtran rental cars come with a Touch n Go card kept in the vehicle, which covers the toll barriers as you drive through.

A few practical points on tolls:

  • Keep the Touch n Go card in the car, it is used to pass the toll barriers
  • The card needs enough balance to cover your journey, so top it up if you plan long expressway trips
  • Toll charges themselves are paid by you as the driver, the card is simply the way to pay them
  • If you are unsure how the card works or its balance, ask our team at pickup

Adding Another Driver

If someone else will share the driving, they must be added as an additional driver on the rental agreement. Only registered drivers are covered to drive the car, so letting an unregistered person drive can affect your protection if anything happens.

An additional driver can be added for a small extra daily charge. The additional driver needs to meet the same requirements as the main driver, including a valid licence, the minimum age, and an international driving permit if they are visiting from abroad. You can add a driver when you book, or ask our team at pickup.

Parking and Everyday Use

Parking fees, such as at malls or public car parks, are paid by you during the rental, they are not included in the rental price. Look after the car as you would your own: park in safe areas, lock it, and keep your belongings out of sight. You are responsible for the car while it is in your care, so a little caution avoids trouble later.

Traffic Summons and Fines

If you receive a traffic summons (saman) while driving the rental car, for example for speeding or a parking offence, you are responsible for it as the driver at the time. Summonses sometimes reach us after you have returned the car, since they are issued to the registered vehicle. If that happens, we will contact you to settle it. Driving within the limits and parking properly is the easiest way to avoid this.

If You Break Down or Have an Accident

If the car breaks down or you are in an accident, your safety comes first. Move to a safe place if you can, and then contact us as soon as possible so we can help. Do not arrange your own repairs or a tow without speaking to us first, as this can affect your protection.

If you are in an accident, these steps help:

  • Make sure everyone is safe, and move out of traffic if it is safe to do so
  • Contact us straight away, and the emergency services if anyone is hurt
  • Take photos of the vehicles, the damage, and the location
  • Get a police report if required, this is often needed for any claim
  • Do not admit fault or agree to private settlements at the scene

Quick reminders during your rental

  • Return the car at the same fuel level you received it, or a charge of RM15 per level applies
  • The mileage allowance covers the whole rental, not per day, see your agreement for the amount
  • Keep the Touch n Go card in the car for tolls, and keep it topped up
  • Only registered drivers may drive, an additional driver can be added for a small daily charge
  • You are responsible for parking fees and any traffic summons
  • If you break down or have an accident, contact us before arranging anything

It also helps to understand the car rental deposit and charges before you return the car, so there are no surprises, and to know what your rental car insurance covers in case of an accident. When you are ready, you can book your car online in a few minutes.
