What does rental car insurance cover?

最終更新日 2026年7月31日

This guide explains how rental car insurance works with Agtran: what Basic CDW covers, what excess means, the optional Super CDW upgrade, what is not covered, and what to do if you have an accident. Before choosing your option, it also helps to have the documents needed to rent a car ready for a smooth pickup.

What Basic Coverage Includes

When you rent with Agtran, Basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) is included as standard unless the rental terms say otherwise. CDW reduces how much you may have to pay if the rental vehicle is accidentally damaged. It does not remove all responsibility, because an excess amount may still apply.

Basic CDW generally includes:

  • Accidental damage protection, according to the rental terms
  • Reduced responsibility compared with having no protection
  • Support based on your selected rental protection plan

Basic CDW does not remove all costs. You may still need to pay an excess amount if damage occurs.

What Excess Means

Excess is the maximum amount you may need to pay if the rental car is damaged or involved in an accident. With Agtran's Basic CDW, you may be responsible for up to RM5,000 for accidental damage. Any remaining eligible costs may be covered according to the protection terms. Understanding the excess helps you decide whether Basic CDW is enough, or whether you want extra coverage.

Super CDW (SCDW): Extra Protection

If you want to reduce your financial responsibility, Agtran offers Super CDW (SCDW) as an optional upgrade. It reduces the excess you may need to pay for eligible accidental damage during the rental, with the exact amount depending on the rental terms. Super CDW is available from RM45 per day.

Super CDW may help you by:

  • Reducing the excess payable for eligible accidental damage
  • Lowering your financial responsibility compared with Basic CDW
  • Giving you greater peace of mind while driving

Super CDW does not cover every situation. You may still be responsible for costs if the damage results from an excluded situation, such as reckless or careless driving, an unauthorised driver, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or breaking the rental agreement.

Basic CDW vs Super CDW: Which to Choose

Basic CDW may suit you if you prefer lower rental costs, are comfortable with the excess amount, and want standard protection. Super CDW may suit you if you want extra protection, prefer less financial risk, and want more confidence on the road, for example if you are driving long distances or are unfamiliar with Malaysian roads. Consider your travel distance, driving environment, and comfort level before choosing.

What Is Not Covered

Rental protection does not cover every situation. You must follow Agtran's rental terms and use the vehicle responsibly to keep your protection valid. If the vehicle is used in a prohibited way, you may be responsible for any damage, fines, penalties, or additional costs. Common situations that may not be covered include:

  • Driving under the influence: driving while affected by alcohol, drugs, or other substances.
  • Illegal activities: using the vehicle to transport illegal items or for unlawful purposes.
  • Unauthorised use: letting someone not approved in the rental agreement drive the vehicle.
  • Commercial use without permission: carrying passengers or goods for payment without approval.
  • Towing without approval: towing or pushing another vehicle or trailer without permission.
  • Driving on unsuitable roads: restricted roads, off-road areas, or unpaved surfaces without authorisation.
  • Overloading: carrying more passengers or items than the vehicle's allowed capacity.
  • Transporting unsafe items: flammable, explosive, hazardous, or strong-smelling items that may damage the vehicle.
  • Reckless driving or misuse: careless use, intentional damage, or unsafe driving.
  • Taking the vehicle outside Malaysia without approval.
  • Carrying pets without permission.
  • Tampering with the vehicle registration or licence plate.
  • Arranging separate insurance for the vehicle without Agtran's consent.

If a prohibited activity occurs, Agtran may end the rental agreement, and you may be responsible for repair costs, fines, penalties, and other charges. Please review the rental terms and protection details before booking so you understand what is covered and what you may still need to pay.

What to Do If You Have an Accident

If an accident happens during your rental:

  • Check safety first. Make sure everyone is safe and move to a secure location if needed.
  • Contact the authorities if required, and make a police report according to local procedures.
  • Inform Agtran immediately, and follow the instructions provided.
  • Prepare details: the accident location, date and time, vehicle details, and photos or documents if available.

Quick checklist before you rent

  • Basic CDW coverage
  • Excess amount
  • Super CDW option
  • Exclusions and limitations
  • Accident reporting process

It also helps to review the car rental deposit and charges before you book. When you are ready, browse cars and book your car rental in Malaysia with Agtran.
