Why is my deposit still pending?
Dernière mise à jour le 16 September 2026
If your deposit still shows as pending after returning the car, it is usually just the bank processing time, not a problem. Once we release the deposit, how quickly it appears back in your account is up to your bank. For most payment methods this takes 3 to 7 days, and for debit cards it can take 7 to 20 days. So a pending deposit within these windows is normal.
Seeing your deposit still held after you have returned the car can be worrying, but in most cases it simply means the refund is working its way through the banking system. Here is what pending usually means and what to do.
Why Is My Deposit Still Pending?
When you return the car in good condition, we release your deposit on our side. From that point, the money has to travel back through the banking system before it shows in your account, and that step is controlled by your bank, not by us. A pending status usually means exactly that: we have released it, and your bank is still processing the return. This is normal and expected within the usual timeframes below.
How Long Should It Take?
The time depends on how you paid:
- Most payment methods: 3 to 7 days to appear back in your account
- Debit cards: 7 to 20 days, depending on your bank
Debit cards often take the longest, because the refund passes through more banking steps than other methods. So if you paid by debit card, a pending status for up to 20 days is within the normal range. For a fuller explanation of the timing, see our guide on how long a deposit refund takes.
Is a Pending Deposit a Charge?
No. A deposit that is pending or held is not the same as a charge. It is a refundable amount that was held as security during your rental, and it is being returned to you. It should not be treated as money you have spent. If your bank shows it as pending, that generally means the return is in progress. Once the bank completes the process, the amount is credited back to you.
When Should I Be Concerned?
Use the timeframes as your guide. A pending deposit is normal up to 7 days for most methods, and up to 20 days for debit cards. You only need to look into it if:
- It has been longer than 7 days and you did not pay by debit card
- It has been longer than 20 days and you paid by debit card
- Your bank has no record of a pending refund at all
- The amount returned does not match what you expected
If any of these apply, follow the steps below.
What Should I Do If It Is Taking Too Long?
If the deposit is still pending beyond the normal window, take these steps in order:
- Check the expected time for your payment method (up to 7 days most methods, up to 20 for debit cards)
- Check with your bank first, since the delay is usually on the banking side after we have released the deposit
- Have your booking reference and the deposit details ready
- If your bank has no record and the expected time has clearly passed, contact Agtran and we will confirm when the deposit was released on our side
Could Something Have Reduced My Deposit?
In most cases the full deposit is returned. It could be reduced if there was something to settle from the rental, for example damage up to the excess amount, a refuelling charge if the car came back with less fuel, or a traffic summons or toll that reached us after the return. If any of these applied, we would contact you to explain before settling. If you were not contacted, the full deposit is on its way back to you within the normal timeframe.
In short
- A pending deposit is usually just bank processing time, not a problem
- Most payment methods: 3 to 7 days. Debit cards: 7 to 20 days
- A pending or held deposit is not a charge, it is being returned to you
- Check with your bank first if it is taking longer than expected
- Contact us if your bank has no record and the normal time has passed
A pending deposit is almost always just a matter of time. For more on the timing, see how long a deposit refund takes, and for the deposit basics, see our guide on the deposit and charges. If you have a specific concern about your booking, contact us with your details.
